USA KURRENT AFFAIRS– In a surprising move made just before Tuesday's Trade Deadline, the Yankees acquired outfielder Harrison Bader from the Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Bader, a Gold Glove Award winner who grew up near Yankee Stadium, is currently out with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Even though Bader is not expected to play until at least September, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman believes the move is worthwhile.

"Harrison Bader is one of the game's elite center-field defenders," Cashman said. "When he's healthy, he opens up a lot of lanes for us and our manager." We certainly did a deep dive into his medicals, and there's a lot of optimism and belief that we'll be able to unpack that present and deploy him sometime in September."

Cardinals acquire: LHP Montgomery, Jordan

The 28-year-old Bader, a native of Bronxville, New York, and a graduate of Horace Mann School in the Bronx, was batting.

This season, he hit 256/.303/.370 with five home runs, 21 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases. He has not appeared in a game since June 26.

Bader received down-ballot Rookie of the Year votes in 2018 with a.756 OPS and is under contract until 2023.

"He's a 60-to-70 defender and runner who can help our team in a variety of ways, whether it's coming off the bench to steal a bag or starting in the outfield," Cashman said.

The Yankees have discussed moving Aaron Judge out of center field in the second half in order to keep his legs fresh for the postseason drive. This season, Judge has started 52 games in center field, the most on the Yankees' roster, ahead of Aaron Hicks (49) and others.

"It's difficult to get someone of that caliber," Cashman said, "and unfortunately, it cost us one of our homegrown players in Jordan Montgomery, on whom we've relied heavily." I'm sorry to see Montgomery go; he's a great pitcher and a great person."

Cashman stated that right-hander Frankie Montas, who was acquired from the Athletics on Monday, will replace Montgomery in the rotation. With Luis Severino set to return in mid-September, New York now has a starting five of Gerrit Cole, Montas, Jameson Taillon, Nestor Cortes, and Domingo Germán.

Montgomery, 29, went 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 21 starts this season, striking out 7.6 batters per nine innings.

Montgomery stated, "This is my family." "I don't know anything else." I've been playing with the same guys for a long time. I'll miss [Aaron] Judge, and I'll miss Jamo. It's difficult."

Montgomery, a six-year veteran who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Yankees from the University of South Carolina, is 22-20 with a 3.94 ERA in 98 career games (97 starts).

Montgomery last pitched against the Royals on Sunday, allowing four runs in four innings and taking a no-decision. His next start could be against the Yankees, as New York travels to St. Louis for a three-game series beginning on Friday.

"It's going to be strange," Montgomery predicted. "I'll do whatever they need me to do over there." It's just strange timing."
